The manufacturer

Chevrolet police vehicles

One hundred and fifty-four entries across thirty-seven Michigan tests. The only manufacturer besides Ford to turn up every single year — and the one that kept walking away from its own best cars.

Chevrolet has never missed a Michigan evaluation in this archive. It has also twice built the fastest police sedan in America and then stopped making it.

The Caprice was killed in 1996 because the plant was wanted for trucks, brought back from Australia in 2011, and dropped again in 2017. The Camaro B4C recorded 160 mph in 2000 — the fastest figure in this entire archive — and was gone two years later. What Chevrolet still sells to police is a Tahoe.

The fastest Chevrolet in every test

Shaded rows are the years the fastest Chevrolet was a two-door; gold rows are the years it was a sport utility. Everything else is a sedan. All 203 entries are in the filtered table.

The quickest-topping Chevrolet each year, with how many Chevrolets were tested that year. Braking changed from twelve stops to twenty in the 2012 book; figures either side of that line are not directly comparable — the later ones come from a harder test.

Ten years when the fastest Chevrolet was a two-door

From 1993 to 2002 the quickest thing Chevrolet brought to Michigan was a Camaro, every single year. Not once in that decade did a Chevrolet sedan top its own manufacturer’s entry.

That is longer than Ford’s equivalent Mustang run, and it covers exactly the years the Caprice was absent. When Chevrolet had no fast sedan to offer, it had a two-door instead — and the two-door was faster than anything else in the test, full stop.

The fastest police vehicle ever recorded by Michigan is a Chevrolet. It has two doors, no room for a cage, and nobody counts it.

Two deaths and a resurrection

The Caprice 9C1 in the Michigan record.
Period
1987–1996Rear-drive, American-built. Leaves at 139 mph, the fastest police sedan in the country
1997–2010Nothing. Not a gap in the archive — the car did not exist
2011–2017Built in Elizabeth, South Australia. Records 156 mph on retest in 2015 and a 125.8 ft stop in 2012
2018–Gone again. Nothing replaces it

Both times Chevrolet stopped building it, the car was the fastest police sedan Michigan had tested. That is an unusual way to leave a market.

One of the three is a four-wheel-drive Tahoe, in 2008. The two-wheel-drive Tahoe has never been disqualified.

Nine Chevrolet entries carry the source’s own limiter footnote. The clearest are the Tahoes of 2002, held at 98 mph, where Michigan marked the figure as a setting rather than a capability.

What Chevrolet sells now

A Tahoe, a Silverado, and since 2025 an electric Blazer. No sedan, no two-door, and nothing built in America that will do 150 mph with a badge on it.

The company that recorded the fastest figure in the history of this test now competes on room, durability and running cost. So does everybody else — which is what the comparison table shows.
